The
Good Governance Index (GGI) was recently launched on the occasion of Good Governance
Day (25th December).
What is GGI?
·
The Index was launched by the Department of Administrative
Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) and the Centre for Good Governance.
·
GGI is a uniform tool to assess the status of governance across states
·
Objectives
·
The States are assessed across 10 sectors : 1)agriculture and allied
sectors 2) commerce and Industries, 3)human resource development, 4)public
health, 5)public infrastructure and utilities, 6)economic governance, 7)social welfare
and development, 8)judicial and public security, 9)environment, and 10)citizen –
centric governance.

Key
findings
·
Tamil Nadu tops the list among the ‘Big States’
followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. The poor performers
in this group are Odisha, Bihar, Goa, and Uttar Pradesh with Jharkhand coming
last.
·
Shortcomings
·
Farmer’s income, prevalence water conservation
systems and inflow of industrial investment have been left out while
formulating the index.
